Having security cameras isn't enough: position, angle and camera type decide whether the system really protects you or just gives a false sense of security. A poor installation can leave blind spots exactly where you're most vulnerable.
What type of camera do you need?
Start by defining what the system is for: deterrence, identifying people, access control or process monitoring? Each goal calls for a different camera type and placement. Dome cameras are ideal indoors, bullet cameras outdoors, and PTZ cameras for large areas that need tracking.
Key spots and mounting height
Prioritize main entrances, parking lots, cash registers, storerooms and high-traffic areas. The ideal mounting height is between 2.5 and 3.5 meters (about 8 to 11.5 feet), at an angle that captures faces without losing the field of view.
Lighting: the most overlooked factor
Lighting is another critical factor: a high-resolution camera in poor lighting captures useless footage. Modern systems with infrared night vision or Starlight technology solve this even in low-light conditions.
